Microneedles are microscopic structures that pierce the outer skin to deliver therapeutics. Most dissolving microneedles quickly dissolve — too fast for sustained release. Silk fibroin, a protein from Bombyx mori silkworm cocoons, can be processed into matrices that control the release over time.
Why it is worth looking at
High-purity silk fibroin needs no bioreactor or transgenic organism. It is a low-CapEx extraction of a cheap agricultural waste — waste silkworm cocoons chopped and boiled in a lithium bromide solution.
