This venture makes nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) — the mineral that is 94% of eggshell — by mechanochemical attritor milling of waste eggshells, a route that sidesteps the expensive wet-chemical and hydrothermal processes nHAp production normally requires.
Why it is worth looking at
Poultry plants pay tip fees to dispose of thousands of tons of eggshell a year; acquiring the feedstock is effectively $0/ton. The nHAp it yields remineralises enamel and dentin at the nanoscale (9–20 nm).
