An ambient-temperature metal conversion and passivation coating built on inositol hexaphosphate (IP6 / phytic acid), a non-toxic organic molecule derived from rice bran. It replaces zinc-phosphate and chromate conversion coatings on bare steel, aluminium and magnesium. IP6 chelates the metal ions dissolving from the substrate into a cross-linked, water-insoluble phytate-metal film that is electrochemically insulating and a strong primer for a paint top-coat. The process is a cold aqueous dip or spray at mild pH, replacing heated 60-90°C phosphating baths, heavy-metal sludge and hexavalent chromium. This concept is proven in the peer-reviewed literature but has not been commercially validated.
