What this is
Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are zero-dimensional carbon nanoparticles, 2-10 nm across, made of an sp2 graphitic carbon core plus a functionalised shell. Unlike semiconductor quantum dots (which use toxic heavy-metal cores like cadmium or selenium) and organic dyes (which photobleach fast), CQDs are robust, non-toxic and cheap to make.
Why it is worth looking at
Conventional nanomaterial production needs extreme vacuum, laser ablation or toxic top-down oxidation of graphite — millions in capital expenditure. CQDs can instead be made by hydrothermal carbonisation of biomass, a low-CapEx route to a high-value anti-counterfeiting ink.
