Concrete sewer pipelines are uniquely vulnerable to Microbiologically Influenced Concrete Corrosion (MICC). In the anaerobic conditions of slow-moving sewage, bacteria produce hydrogen sulfide gas, which attacks the concrete. This venture replaces Portland cement with geopolymers — inorganic polymers made by activating aluminosilicate precursors such as Class F fly ash or ground granulated blast furnace slag with an alkali.
Why it is worth looking at
Geopolymers provide a chemical bypass to the MICC failure mode, and they can be made in existing precast concrete facilities — no massive thermal kilns running at 1100–1450°C, which is what Portland cement production requires.
